Not all vinyl is the same. Using the wrong type of vinyl for a job leads to early failure, unhappy clients, and wasted material. For UAE print shops operating in extreme heat, UV, and dusty conditions, understanding the differences between vinyl types is essential.
Calendered vs Cast Vinyl
Calendered (Monomeric and Polymeric)
Calendered vinyl is manufactured by pressing PVC through heavy rollers. The resulting film has internal stress from the manufacturing process, which means it will eventually try to return to its original flat shape — causing lifting and shrinkage over time, especially in UAE heat.
- Monomeric calendered: Lifespan ~1–2 years outdoors. Suitable for short-term indoor/outdoor graphics, point-of-sale, and events. Not suitable for vehicle applications.
- Polymeric calendered: Lifespan ~3–5 years outdoors. Improved stability over monomeric. Suitable for flat or slightly curved surfaces but not deep vehicle curves or wraps.
Cast Vinyl
Cast vinyl is manufactured by pouring liquid PVC onto a casting sheet and curing it. This process eliminates internal stress, producing a film that is dimensionally stable, conformable, and highly resistant to shrinkage.
- Lifespan: 7–12 years outdoors depending on brand and application.
- Suitable for full vehicle wraps, curved architectural panels, and any application requiring conformability.
- Top brands stocked by CMYK in the UAE include Arlon and Multitack cast and calendered films.
In UAE summer heat (40°C+), cast vinyl maintains its adhesion and colour far better than calendered films. For any vehicle work or permanent outdoor signage, always use cast.
Overlaminate Vinyl
Overlaminate protects digitally printed vinyl from UV fading, scratching, and moisture. Always laminate outdoor prints intended for direct sun exposure in the UAE. Key types:
- Gloss overlaminate: High visual impact, suits indoor and general outdoor use.
- Matte overlaminate: Premium finish, reduces glare. Popular for architectural and interior graphics.
- Textured overlaminates: Carbon fibre, brushed metal, and sand textures for vehicle accents.
- Anti-graffiti overlaminate: For outdoor signage in public areas — allows graffiti removal without damaging the print.
Specialist Films
- Reflective vinyl: 3M, Avery, and Orafol reflective films for road signs, safety markings, and emergency vehicle graphics.
- Perforated window vinyl: One-way vision for vehicle windows, retail windows, and building graphics.
- Floor vinyl: Anti-slip laminated vinyl for wayfinding and promotional floor graphics.
- Backlit film: For LED light boxes and illuminated displays. Requires inks and profiles optimised for transparency.
