Lamination is a critical finishing step for many wide format print products — protecting prints from UV, moisture, and mechanical damage while adding a premium look. UAE print shops typically choose between hot and cold lamination systems, and the right choice depends on your media types, production volume, and finishing requirements.
Hot Lamination
Hot laminators use heat and pressure to bond a polyester or polypropylene film to the print surface. Temperatures typically range from 80°C to 160°C depending on the film type.
Advantages
- Strong, permanent bond — ideal for outdoor signage in UAE heat and UV conditions.
- Wide range of film finishes: gloss, matte, satin, soft-touch, textured, and holographic.
- Generally lower film cost per square metre than cold films.
- Well-suited for paper-based prints, canvas, and most rigid board substrates.
Disadvantages
- Not suitable for heat-sensitive media such as some vinyl films and backlit films — heat can cause curling, bubbling, or distortion.
- Requires warm-up time and operator attention to temperature control.
- Can damage solvent-ink prints if used too hot before the ink has fully outgassed.
Cold Lamination
Cold laminators use a pressure-sensitive adhesive film applied without heat. The laminate is pressed onto the print using rubber rollers.
Advantages
- Safe for all print media including heat-sensitive vinyl, backlit film, and fresh solvent/eco-solvent ink prints.
- Faster to use — no warm-up time required.
- Ideal for vehicle wrap overlaminate applications.
- Produces a more flexible finished product suitable for wrapping and contouring.
Disadvantages
- Film cost is generally higher than hot laminate films.
- Bond strength can be lower in extreme heat — a consideration for direct-sun outdoor applications in UAE summer.
- Requires careful media handling to avoid air bubbles during application.
Combination Laminators
Many modern laminators support both hot and cold modes, giving print shops maximum flexibility. CMYK can supply combination hot/cold laminators from desktop sizes up to 1.6m wide.
What CMYK Recommends for UAE Print Shops
For a typical Sharjah or Dubai sign shop producing banners, posters, and vehicle graphics, a combination hot/cold laminator in the 1.3m–1.6m width range covers most applications. Pair it with a range of thermal gloss, thermal matte, and cold overlaminate films.
CMYK stocks lamination film in gloss, matte, satin, soft-touch, and anti-scratch finishes in popular widths. Browse our lamination consumables or contact our team for equipment recommendations.
